THE NATURE OF COUNSELING IN WORK ENVIRONMENT

Henry was the Human Resource officer in his company. He has troubles keeping track of his employees’ performances, as he himself experienced stress at works. He was strict to employees, implemented many policies, and frequently terminates workers who can’t fulfill their work objectives. As result, he received a lot of complaints from his subordinates, who addressed him as ‘cold’, ‘merciless’ and even ‘monstrous’.

By practicing these methods, Henry was able to manage his emotion, and more importantly, acquiring the skills to solve interpersonal problems.

After acquired the essential counselling skills, Henry became more understanding to his own needs, learned how to cope personal stress, and became more emphatic towards others. He managed to rebuild the rapport with his employees, and increase their productivity. The stressor was still there, but he was able to handle it more efficiently, as well as supported his subordinates to deal with their own personal issues.

Stressor in work

The term ‘stressor’ refers to anything physical or psychological that produces stress in human. The fast pace in business, heavy workload in organization, or the lack of personal freedom; all these factor are stressors that produce a great deal of stress in employees, which interfere with their productivity, motivation and health.

Counselling as a technique

Counselling is a people management strategy that can enhance personal growth. This technique can be applied by human resource personnel, executives, supervisors, manager or any position that is related to human interaction.
